The Zen College Life blog is an online source for college students, where they can obtain helpful guides on how to live a stress-free and more fulfilling on-campus experience. Various topics are discussed at the Zen College Life, including technology, relationship building, education, and finances.

What this site offers

A blog site for college students, the Zen College Life is more than just your ordinary college life blog. Yes, it does offer excellent education tips and guides, as well as a few hints in keeping your finances in check, but the Zen College Life offers a few lighthearted topics too. You can find topics under the categories of happiness, motivation, simplicity, and self-improvement.

The blog challenges college students to adopt the practice of simplicity, no matter how big a challenge it might be. I was able to read on posts that center around enjoying life?s simple pleasures, like appreciating the weather and doing workouts. The blog also outlines great money tips, and for many college students out there, this guide will always come in handy. For me, the thing which makes this blog site different from other blogs is its unique approach to university life. Students are not merely taught to excel, as they are also given excellent tips on how to be more productive, happier, and more content.

The clean and simple look of the blog is also one of its positive points. Online visitors can simply click on a certain category, recent post, or any of the tags to get to the topic that they want. Thus, site navigation is not a problem, and even guest writers are allowed to add any post, as long the topics are appropriate for the site. For any college student looking for great tips towards a more fulfilling campus life, the Zen College Life Blog is a top choice.

Areas for improvement

The only suggestion I can give for improvement is that the site should also include more articles and topics on student diversity. With more entries on this topic, this blog will definitely become more popular.

Definitely not your ordinary college blog, College Candy is a blog site for college females who are on the lookout for news, views, relationship advice, fashion tips, and everything in between. It is an interactive website site that goes beyond college survival tips; it offers a wide array of less serious blog topics as well. If you are in college, and relationships, fashion, celebrities, and academic grades all interest you, then this blog is for you.

With the blog posts written by college women and specifically for college women, College Candy is no doubt one of the most entertaining blog sites around. Women are sure to find a few tips on beauty, such as the latest in make-up trends, scents, and facials. Advice on relationships can be found on the blog, too.

What makes this blog special

What sets this blog apart from many of the college blog sites on the Internet however, is that it speaks about sex and sexual relationships quite liberally. Not all college blogs can be as open-minded, but College Candy takes the idea of a college blog site to a whole new level. Women are allowed to have fun, and to share their thoughts if they feel like it. Celebrity gossip and Hollywood news abound on the site as well, making it popular for many college girls.

Suggestions for improvement

I like the general layout and color scheme for the blog, especially with its deep red background color. However, the site appears somewhat cluttered, with its huge photos and non-strategic placement of ads (a huge block of ads after each blog post). Nonetheless, the blog site offers a big dose of fun, entertainment, and information to college women and with a just a few tweaks, I don?t see why College Candy shouldn?t rise in popularity even more.

Relevant Experiences in Sample Admission EssaysHow Sample College Admission Essays Can Help You Discuss Relevant Health-related Experiences in Your Essay

If you are a student planning to take up a medical degree in the future, it is very important that you gather as many health-related and research experiences as possible to guarantee your medical school admission.  Make sure you capitalize on them when you write your essay for the admissions committee.  Of course, as an applicant, you’d want to be the best candidate in the eyes of the admissions committee.  So, here are some tips on how to write your essay, emphasizing your health-related experiences, which definitely will help guarantee your school admission.

Highlighting experiences

Highlight your “hands-on” or practical experience on handling real patient-care situations, either in school or in your community. Focus your writing on your previous experiences on the various health fields such as having direct patient contact, working in a hospital or doctor’s office as a receptionist, or working in summer camps for diabetics.  Tell them how these experiences allowed you to observe the nature of work of various professionals that make up a health system, which includes the doctors, nurses, support staff and patients.

Clinical, research, and community service experiences, which you may have had, are also very important to highlight especially if they involve direct patient contact.  You should aim to list down as many health-related experiences you’ve had as possible, so that you will be a very much potential candidate for admission, as well as be very knowledgeable in preparation for your admission interviews.

You may also include your practical experiences in hospital work such as hot-line or personal counseling, EMT, and lifesaving CPR, which are highly valued by the admissions committee.  If you emphasize these, you increase your chances of being accepted to medical school.  Since your experiences will indicate your interests in the field of medicine, be unique in laying-out your health-related experiences.  You may also highlight a volunteer organization you have joined, such as the volunteer services in hospitals and health-related agencies, where you have participated in.  If  you have experienced paid jobs for positions such as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA), Phlebotomist, EMT, and many others, include them as well for they will be an integral part of your evaluation.

Other factors vital for admission

Students should be aware that high grades alone are no guarantee of admission. In recent years, admissions committees have been going beyond reviewing undergraduates’ grades and standardized test scores such as the MCAT, DAT, OAT, and PCAT. Now, they also review an applicant’s character, knowledge of health care, and the depth of commitment to pursuing medicine.  Dwell on these factors and you are guaranteed admission.

Most medical school committees also scrutinize for a trace of “leadership” or “organizational ability” in the applicants, looking for any record of health-related participations.  So, always remember that the school admission committee will put great value on your record of service.  Therefore, make sure you highlight this as well on your essay, not to mention that you have a broad understanding of the human conditions.  Again, if you really are decided on pursuing a career in the field of medicine, make sure you qualify for the school admissions committee’s criteria.  You should have theneeded level of maturity, participated actively in community service, have experience in healthcare-related fields, be aware of healthcare issues, show human compassion and sensitivity, possess medical ethics and the trait of a logical problem solver.  Make sure you clearly write them down on your essay.  With these, you are surely on your way to becoming a doctor.

sample college admission essaysApart from studying hard and meeting new people, you will also get to encounter different types of guys in college. Some are worth your time, while others are not. You can act nice initially, but if you have no idea how to handle them, you might end up being the object of their idiosyncrasies in the long run. So, read about some of the general types of college guys below and know how to deal with them.

The jock

Other than being involved in a sports team, the athlete is often serious about his class standing. After all, he is required to maintain a set of grades, otherwise, he will be taken out of his team (or have his athletic scholarship revoked). So, you might want to hang out with an athlete who can even influence you to live a healthy lifestyle. And when it comes to dating a jock, be ready to be invited to his games or to lend support even when he’s in training.

The frat boy

Fraternities are common in some colleges and universities in the US. Some are the healthy type while others are simply about the wrong sense of brotherhood. So, before you lend your most-treasured lecture notes or date any frat boy, learn more about how he commits to his fraternity. Avoid frat boys who are laid back in doing school work and who practice an irrational kind of brotherhood. Also, avoid a frat boy who is required by his “brothers” to share almost anything with them.

The smart one

You might like to be friends with or even date a guy if you think he is cool enough to balance seriousness and fun. A smart guy can serve as a role model, as long as he also knows how to deal with everything outside of his books. But if he is known for being detached from reality, is dominating and is intimidating, avoid him and just deal with other smart guys in class.

The parasite

At first he is very friendly and nice and you’ll consider dating or hanging out with him. But eventually, he sticks to you when he forgets to do his paper or to study for an exam. He even asks you to write notes about a lecture so he can photocopy later on. When you see signs like these in a guy, stay away from him next time. He is only using you for his benefit and comfort.

sample college admission essays There are a lot of materials out there that will teach students how to be highly effective. Managing one’s time wisely, having the right attitude, and setting goals are just some of the things that these self-help articles or books would teach a student. Although these tips can be quite effective, there is another approach that could help students in their academic endeavors.

Knowing what NOT to do can be just as effective as knowing what to do, and can sometimes work a lot better. This way, you eliminate the things that hinder you from being a successful student. These are some of the habits or attitudes that a student must get rid of to become a successful student.

Putting off things until the last minute

Procrastination is one of the bad habits that a lot of students have. They would not do their work until the deadline looms over them. There are so many reasons this can be bad for a student. One of them is that the student would only realize then that the work is actually a bit more difficult than they thought. This in turn could result in a lot of stress. What happens is that instead of maximizing the time and to create an A-grade work or fully understand a given reading, the student is forced to submit a “not-so-good” work. This eventually results in another bad attitude: being content with mediocrity.

Complacency with mediocrity

Companies nowadays can get very competitive with one another and would like to hire topnotch employees. Students that have reveled in mediocrity for most of their academic life would have a hard time getting hired as opposed to those that have shown exemplary marks. If you have the capacity to get grades that are higher than the passing mark, then why not work on it?

Not seeing the bigger picture

Everything you do at school can have an impact on future studies. Doing things just because you have to do them to graduate or get a passing grade is never a good idea. In school, you’re given plenty of opportunities to hone your skills and reach your potentials so take advantage of them.

Acting on impulse

Students that act on impulse may create situations that they would not have wanted to happen in the first place. Acting on impulse usually means making decisions without really thinking about possible consequences. As a student, you should be able to think more rationally. Before making a decision, take a step back and consider all the variables that would be affected by your decision. This way, you have carefully studied the positive things that would come out of your decision, and, at the same time, be ready for any negative repercussions.

Being pessimistic

In school, getting low grades is part of the learning process. But you shouldn’t dwell much on your weaknesses. Instead, consider failures and mistakes as opportunities for you to improve yourself.
